Types of Retail Display Materials
Acrylic
Acrylic, sometimes called plexiglass, is a kind of plastic used for a wide range of applications, such as acrylic nails, paint, security barriers, medical equipment, LCD panels, and more. Acrylic displays are typically used to showcase products that require additional protection because of its durability. It is very adaptable, and its high transparency gives the appearance of more room in confined areas while illuminating spaces and highlighting objects on show. Acrylic displays are robust and hard to break and they don’t require the delicate handling of other materials, which might be a problem when selecting display solutions. It is the ideal alternative for creative ideas that need to meet the requirements of a specific space, product, or aesthetic because it offers a greater number of colors, display options, and corresponding sizes.
Cardboard
Cardboard point-of-purchase displays are incredibly affordable, much more so than plastic, metal, or wood. It has a shorter lifespan than other materials, but this can be useful if you plan to switch out your current displays for updated ones in a semi-regular manner. Thanks to its simplicity, it has less production setup requirements, making it possible to quickly implement a new merchandising strategy like those for short seasonal marketing campaigns. Cardboard can be easily cut and shaped, and the, the cost of shipping light-weight cardboard is an extra bonus!
Wire
These displays are constructed from strong yet lightweight wire, often recycled, making it an environmentally friendly option for your displays. Wire displays increase product visibility, while the open and clean design prevents dust collection in-store settings – a problem common to components made from solid materials, particularly wood and plastic. Wire displays are attractive thanks to their durability and longevity, making them an ideal option for re-use.
Styrene
Styrene is another plastic product used in many resins and is a very affordable option for retail displays. It’s light in density, fairly rigid, and comes with smooth, frosted edges. Styrene is often compared with acrylic, a product which is slightly more durable, but it can be a fine substitute if you’re looking to save some money. It holds its shape particularly well, and due to its light weight, it’s a favorable option for reducing costs when ordering large shipments.
PETG
PETG, which stands for Polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified is a very strong and durable clear thermoplastic that can be colored during fabrication. It’s very flexible and is virtually unbreakable, in fact PETG is up to 200 times harder than glass! This makes it an excellent choice for larger displays and cases. Usually among the more expensive options, it is still rather economical while also offering great resilience over materials like acrylic. PETG is easy to fabricate, has excellent ink adhesion, and is generally inexpensive compared to polycarbonate alternatives.
